Less than a week after the anniversary of the usurping of Puerto Rico by the United States the Governor of the U.S. "commonwealth" has requested that the United Nations "review the island's status" in hopes of gaining greater autonomy. Members of the Governor's political party hope to be able to negotiate their own trade deals in the future while maintaining a connection to the United States.

The American Colony of Puerto Rico
Yesterday was the 109th anniversary of the initial American occupation of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. I don't proclaim to be an expert on Puerto Rico-U.S. relations but I do think it is an interesting anniversary that is indicative of the behavior of the United States across the world and across time. There has been struggles, in the past, for Puerto Rican independence. Some of this sentiment still remains but the numbers for those calling for it appear to have shrunk dramatically. Residents of Puerto Rico cannot vote for President and do not have voting representatives in Congress yet they are subject to Selective Services, aka, the draft.
